Australian Student Visa Guide for Bangladeshi Students — What You Need to Know

Understanding the Next Step After University Admission

Receiving an offer from an Australian university is an important milestone. However, international students must also obtain the appropriate visa before beginning their studies in Australia.

For most Bangladeshi students undertaking a full-time university degree, the relevant visa is the Student Visa (Subclass 500).

Here is an overview of the process and the issues to consider.

1. Obtain Your Confirmation of Enrolment

Before applying for a Student Visa, you will generally need a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

This is issued by your Australian education provider after you complete the necessary enrolment requirements.

An ordinary offer letter and a CoE are not the same document.

The CoE confirms the registered course in which you are enrolled.

2. Understand the Genuine Student Requirement

Australia assesses applicants under the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.

This involves demonstrating that studying in Australia is the primary reason for seeking a Student Visa.

Applicants may be asked about their current circumstances, the reasons for choosing their course and provider, how the course will benefit them, and other relevant information.

Your responses should accurately reflect your circumstances and be supported by suitable evidence.

Avoid copying generic statements or supplying misleading information.

3. Prepare Financial Evidence

Applicants must satisfy Australia's financial capacity requirements.

Depending on the applicable evidence requirements, this may involve demonstrating access to funds for travel, tuition fees and living costs, alongside additional costs where family members are included.

The amount required for visa purposes is not necessarily the amount you will actually spend.

Students should check the Department of Home Affairs' current financial guidance rather than relying on figures circulating on social media.

4. Arrange Health Insurance

Most international students need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the required period.

Make sure your cover complies with visa requirements.

Also understand its limits, exclusions and the possibility of out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.

5. Check English, Health and Character Requirements

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to provide an approved English-language result, undergo medical examinations or submit documents relating to your character and identity.

University admission requirements are not identical to immigration requirements.

6. Lodge Your Application

Australian Student Visa applications are generally lodged online through ImmiAccount.

From 2 October 2026, most applicants must lodge their application from outside Australia unless they meet an eligible in-country category or exemption.

Always check the current rules and ensure your application is complete and accurate.

Processing times can vary, so avoid booking non-refundable travel before understanding the risks involved.

7. Know Your Student Visa Conditions

Eligible Student Visa holders can generally work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, subject to specific conditions and exceptions.

You must also comply with relevant enrolment and insurance requirements.

Your visa grant letter and Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) provide important information about your individual conditions.

Does a Student Visa Guarantee Permanent Residency?

No.

Studying in Australia does not guarantee future employment, a graduate visa or permanent residency.

Migration requirements can change, and each subsequent visa category has its own eligibility criteria.

Any long-term immigration decision should be based on current official information and, where necessary, advice from a properly authorised professional.

The Vitaliah Perspective

A student visa application should never be treated as a formality.

Clear documentation, genuine intentions and sufficient preparation are essential.

Your next step: Review your university's enrolment instructions and the Department of Home Affairs' official Student Visa checklist before applying.
